Why a new church here?
Many folks looking for a Biblically-centered church currently leave Oberlin for worship. Establishing a local, gospel-centered witness provides many more opportunities to live out authentic Christian faith alongside the neighbors who call Oberlin home.
Why “Sparrow”?
“Even the sparrow finds a home,
and the swallow a nest for herself,
where she may lay her young,
at your altars, O LORD of hosts,
my King and my God.
Blessed are those who dwell in your house,
ever singing your praise!”
Psalm 84:3–4
There is no creature too humble nor expression of community too basic that God could not dwell with them there, creating a sacred space. Indeed, through Christ, God has come to do just that: to dwell with us. We are like the sparrows who gather and find our home with the living God.

Sam grew up on the mission field in Bolivia, where he saw his parents take risks to present the gospel and saw the gospel transform lives.
Abbie graduated from the Oberlin music conservatory and understands the pressures and struggles students face.
They are committed to an intentional, incarnational, co-vocational ministry that invests in and serves the Oberlin community, both as an outworking of the gospel and as an invitation to discover more about the God who has come to know, redeem, and restore them.
They look at the Lord’s table and ask: Who is missing? Where do we find them? How can we serve them? How can we show them Jesus?

Haven Brewing is the first micro-brewery in town, providing an employment opportunity, a gathering place, food by Abbie, beer by Sam, non-alcoholic options, board games, and a family-friendly respite.
Sam’s goal is to be a co-vocational church planter, with Haven’s revenue eventually helping support his family and Sparrow Church.
Co-vocational ministry is, by design, one where the church planter also works in the community he serves. This is a long-term strategy that builds trust and connection with those outside the church.
Haven is a commitment to Oberlin, a platform to build relationships and goodwill, and an opportunity to display the difference authentic Christian faith makes in the business place.

Phase I is about embedding long-term in Oberlin: learning the values and rhythms of the community, building relational connections through the restaurant, engaging people with the gospel, and gathering for worship and hospitality in the home.
Phase II is about Sam stepping away from his current job so the Fosters can invest more fully in the sustainability of the restaurant, follow up with the contacts they’ve made, find a publicly accessible location for worship, and plant a church on the foundation already being built.
This effort will require the support of the larger Christian community through prayer and financial giving.
Our Vision
God sees and cares for His people as He does the sparrow. Sparrow Church desires to reflect Him in all we do: building connected community, learning to understand and support each, growing in relationship to God and to His world through the grace we have received in Christ. We long to experience the transforming love of Christ, a love that changes the isolation of individual chaos into a family-gathering around His table.

Sam is currently “tri-vocational”: working full-time as a remote computer programmer, operating Haven as owner and brew master, and gathering and preaching on Sundays.
Abbie develops the menu, manages the kitchen and cooks at Haven, teaches part-time at Oberlin College, practices hospitality ministry, hosts worshippers and students in their home, and homeschools their three school-aged children.
As you can imagine, this pace is not sustainable for the Fosters.
Your support can help make it possible for Sam to leave his full-time remote work and invest himself fully in the people and community of Oberlin.
